Rome, narrated as you walk it

Self-guided audio walks through Rome — hand-crafted stop by stop, told in your ear as you reach each one. Start free, in your browser.

Rome doesn't need an introduction. It needs a narrator. The stones are all still here, the piazzas and the fountains and the temple that became a church without ever becoming less of a marvel. What's missing when you stand in front of them is the person who tells you what you're actually looking at, right at the moment you're looking at it. That's what Trove is for. Open it on your phone, put your earphones in, and walk. At each stop, a narrator tells you the story of the thing in front of you, and when something catches you, ask for more. Every stop goes deeper if you want it to, and moves on if you don't.

Start with the free walk: a curated route through the historic centre, eight stops over about a kilometre and a half. Budget one to two hours depending on how often Rome stops you in your tracks. There's no group to meet and no departure time, so you set the pace, pause for an espresso, take the wrong turn on purpose. The walk is completely free, full narration included, no card required. Beyond it, Rome's great sites and museums each have their own full tours from €2.99, and the City Pass at €12.99 unlocks everything Trove has in the city. Anything you've already bought is knocked off the price of a pass, so upgrading never means paying twice.

Walks in Rome

Inside Sant'Ignazio: a free mini tour

Four short stories inside Sant'Ignazio — included free in the Trove app, no unlock needed.

  1. The Nave: Built to Be Seen From Below

Step in, walk to the centre, and look up — the whole church was arranged for this one moment.

  2. The Dome That Was Never Built

That soaring cupola over the crossing is flat — a painting on canvas, flawless from exactly one spot.

  3. The Glory of Saint Ignatius

The main ceiling doesn't just show heaven — it tears the roof open and floods the church with painted sky.

  4. Step Off the Mark

Now do the thing you're not supposed to — walk off the disc and watch heaven fall apart.

What it costs

The Rome walk above is free — it's how Trove introduces itself. Beyond that, tours are from €2.99 (quick sites €0.99), and the City Pass at €12.99 unlocks everything in Rome. No subscription — unlock once in the app, yours to keep.

Rome questions, answered

Is the Rome walking tour really free?

Yes. The full walk, all eight stops, complete narration. It's how we'd rather introduce ourselves than with an ad. Paid tours exist for individual sites and museums (from €2.99), but the free walk isn't a teaser or a trial. It's the whole thing.

Do I need to book a time or join a group?

No. Trove is self-guided, so you start whenever you like and walk at your own pace. Sunrise before the crowds or an evening passeggiata, the narrator is ready when you are.

Do I need mobile data?

You'll need a connection to load a tour the first time, but once it's loaded, the audio and text are downloadable and work offline. The pattern that works well: grab the walk over hotel wifi with your morning coffee, then head out with roaming off. Trove isn't a navigation app though, so if you want Google Maps guiding you between stops, that part may still use data.

How long does the walk take?

The route is about 1.5 km of easy walking through the historic centre. Budget one to two hours: the walking itself is under half an hour, and the rest is Rome's fault.

Can I get tours of individual sites and museums too?

Yes. Beyond the free walk, major sites and museums in Rome have their own dedicated tours, and quick versions exist for smaller spots from €0.99. Buy a single site for €2.99 and its price comes off any pass you buy later, so there's no double paying and no pressure to decide upfront.
